Filmgruppen i Växjö

Filmgruppen shows movies every Thursday and Sunday in Weber located in the main buildning. Membership cost 60kr/semester (40 kr for exchangestudents) and include all screenings. Members must be students at Växjö university. Contact: filmgruppen@vxu.se

    about Memories of Geisha

    I wathched this film throuth the
    filmgruppen a little bit long time ago.
    honestly I didn't want to see this film. Because I heard that this is not that worth to give my over 2 hours. Especially you have a asian identity. But at that time I didn't have a lot to do. So I just went there to see and to spend my spare time. :)

    I can say about this film as a
    'typical hollywood film which made the Fantasy of Asia'.

    I talked about this film with some of korean friedns. They also agreed about this opinion. and this film was not that successful in south korea.
    But I am not the representive of Asia, so I can say this is 'my' opinion.

    Moreover I think there is not 'Asia'. I can say that there are several nations.
    the big term 'Asia' can be fantasy for the white people.

    For example, the worst thing in the film is that the actor/actress speaks in english.
    I can ask about this, 'for whom?'.
    'For whom they speak in english?'
    'For whom this film is made?'
    Of course I know that this film is made in U.S.A.

    and the main actresses are from china. but they act as if they are japanese people. Is this can be a blobalization? no. I don't think so.

    Asian actresses speak english, and chinese actresses act as if they were Japanese. for me those things are so strange. eventhough I am not nationalists. this funny and strange mixture is just for the fantasy of 'Asia'.

    And they just borrowed the icon the'Geisha' which is extremly beautiful.

    making fantasy, espesially on the woman's body or the icon of woman is very significant. not only because they are just beautiful but also their body can be considered as a colonial continent. I know that my words are so tough but I think I am not lying. :)
