I denna film (från regissören av American Pie och Om en pojke) är Hugh Grant i högform som den sliskige och självcentrerade programledaren för det populära tv-programmet American Dreamz. Bland de aspirerande Dreamz-finalisterna finns Sally (Mandy Moore), en skönhet från södern som ger ett perfekt intryck framför kameran men som inte är lika trevlig i det verkliga livet, samt Omar, en motvillig tävlande med en förkärlek för musikaler.
